Our Eco-bathroom

Posted by: | January 20, 2009 | No Comment |

Good news!  We have our first (but not last) eco bathroom.  Let me explain…

With the special flushing mechanism, you don’t need to use so much water each time we flush the toilet.

With the push down taps, they will always pop up again so that we can never (accidently) keep the taps running and wasting all that water.

Wouldn’t it be great to get more of these simple things put in. Oh the bad news – girls, you won’t be able to use all these gadgets as they are in the boys toilet in the P1-7 class! Sorry.

Bronze Award Success

Posted by: | January 20, 2009 | No Comment |

The Eco-committee have successfully gained the Bronze award – the first step towards being a Green Flag school!  Well done!

Our Bronze Award

The group have worked hard over the last 2 terms (and the year before that) and are continuing to acheive the targets that they have set themselves.  Have a look at the action plan that they put together.

They are still collecting paper and milk bottle tops for recycling, they are still composting our fruit and veg remains, they are still keeping the playground clear of litter, they are still collecting old phones for recycling (and to raise money), we now have one eco friendly bathroom, we are still trying to tackle the garden, we are about to carry out the RSPB bird survey – whew!!!!!

Thank you for all the help that people have given us so far.  If you can help us in any way in the future, let us know.  Although we meet regularly and try to keep everyone up to date, we will still need your help and support as we go along.

Keep an eye on this blog for more successes.

The Big Bird Watch

Posted by: | January 20, 2009 | No Comment |

On Wednesday 21st the whole school is going to watch the birds and count how many of each type they see.  We will bird watch for an hour.  We are doing this because we have taken part in the RSPB Big Bird Watch.  We have put some nuts and some bird seed and some fat balls out in the school grounds to attract the birds, so we can count them.

Find out more by visiting www.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch.

We will post our results next week.

Eco Action Plan

Posted by: | December 8, 2008 | 1 Comment |

The eco-committee have made an action plan.  Even if you are busy, we would still love it if you could help us because it is our school.

Find out more by reading it.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact us.

Eco committee Action Plan 2008 – 2009

This is our action plan for 2008 – 2009.  We think that the tasks below are important and we think that we will manage to start most of them this year, keep some of the activities going and to finish some during this school year.  We will look at how we are getting on at the end of each term.

This list is not the only things that we will do this year, as we will take the opportunity to do more things within the school and within the community as we hear about them.

We will let everyone know how we are getting on by:

J                    keeping our blog up-to-date,

J                    telling the pupils important news at assembly,

J                    letting the Pupil Council and Parent Council know,

J                    posting our minutes at the front door, and

J                    producing a newsletter.

Litter – Lewis & Caleb

We would like our playground to be litter free. We will do this by:

Task

Person responsible

When

Is it done/being done

Litter picking rota

Lewis & Caleb

Daily

Litter busting days

Lewis & Caleb

Once a term

Energy – Eoseph & Eilidh

We would like our school to be energy efficient.  We will try to get energy from greener sources and we will try to use energy responsibly.  We will do this by:

Getting solar power panels at the school

Mrs Culbertson

the school checked has been checked and we are waiting to hear more news

Asking the Council to switch off the outside lights at night

Eoseph & Eilidh

Term 2

Look into getting a wind turbine for the school

Next year

Waste Minimisation – Uilleam, Christopher & Marsali

We would like to recycle as much as we can within the school.  We would like to reduce the amount waste by being more careful about what we use and what we throw away into the rubbish bins.

Health and Wellbeing – Lucy & Shona

We are a Health Promoting school, which doesn’t just mean eating the healthy food served at lunch times.  We want to show everyone how easy it is to be healthy.  We want to start with just little things first and then build it up from there.

Task

Person responsible

When

Is it done/being done

Grow vegetables

Lucy & Shona

Term 4

Water – Eoseph & Christopher

We are not too good at using small amounts of water, as some pupils forget to turn taps off.  We would like to be more responsible and use less water.

Task

Person responsible

When

Is it done/being done

Push down taps for sinks, in bathrooms

Shona & Christopher

Write letter to Council Term 2

Transport –

Most of the pupils at our school get picked up in the school minibus, which we think is great as it cuts down on the number of cars being used.  Some pupils cycle to school and we want to encourage this.  We also want to encourage walking and we also want to keep an eye on the speed of the traffic passing our school, as we have just had the main road upgraded.  But this will have to wait a little longer.

Task

Person responsible

When

Is it done/being done

Get cycle rack for school

Lewis & Eoseph

In place for Term 4

Biodiversity – Finlay & Eilidh

We have a fabulous area that is meant to be our garden, but it is a complete mess at the moment.  We have asked for help and are waiting to hear back from parents.  If we can even sort out a small part of the garden (although all of it would be good) then we would like to do the following projects:

Task

Person responsible

When

Is it done/being done

Carry out wildlife surveys

Finlay & Eilidh

1 every term (starting from Term 3 2009)

Carry out RSPB annual bird count

Finlay

Eilidh & Finlay

Term 3
